Booking your maternity session is just the first step in capturing this fleeting, magical time of your pregnancy. But what comes next? How do you ensure you look and feel your best? What should you wear? When is the perfect time to schedule? If these questions are swirling in your mind, you're not alone. In this guide, I'll walk you through everything you need to know to prepare for your maternity session.

As an Essex maternity photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing the quiet strength, anticipation, and love that radiates from so many expectant mothers. This season of life—while brief—is one of the most powerful transitions a woman will ever experience. That’s why I’m so passionate about maternity photography: it allows you to pause time and celebrate the beauty of this chapter before your baby is in your arms.

When to Schedule Your Maternity Session

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is “When should I schedule maternity session photos?” The sweet spot for most expectant mothers is between 28 to 34 weeks. At this stage, your bump is beautifully visible, but you’re likely still comfortable enough to move around and pose with ease.

Timing can vary depending on your unique body and pregnancy experience. If you’re carrying multiples or have a history of early delivery, consider scheduling earlier—around 26 to 30 weeks—to ensure we don’t miss the opportunity.

For those dreaming of an outdoor session, it’s also important to consider the season and typical weather patterns. Spring and fall offer softer light and comfortable temperatures, while summer sessions can be dreamy if planned for early morning or golden hour to avoid the heat.

What to Wear: Styling Tips for Your Maternity Photos

Your wardrobe has the power to elevate your photos and make you feel your absolute best. Here are some tips to guide you:

  • Silhouettes: Opt for flattering styles like fitted dresses that accentuate your bump, empire waist gowns, or flowing maxi dresses that offer beautiful movement.

  • Colors: Soft, neutral tones like ivory, cream, beige, soft pinks and blues photograph beautifully and allow your natural glow to shine. Avoid neon colors or bold patterns that can distract from the emotion in your images.

  • Fabrics: Choose breathable, light fabrics like chiffon, lace, or jersey that add texture and grace to your photos.

  • Accessories: Think delicate jewelry, flower crowns, or my personal favorite wide-brim hats to add a personal and elegant touch.

  • Coordinating Outfits: If your partner or children are joining, dress them in coordinating (not matching) colors and simple outfits that complement your look without clashing. If finding and putting together coordinating outfits for the family sounds stressful, your not alone! I’m always ready to help!

Beauty Preparation for Radiant Photos

Looking radiant in your photos begins well before the camera clicks. Here are some maternity photoshoot tips to help you feel as stunning as I see you:

  • Skincare: In the week leading up to your session, keep your skincare routine gentle and hydrating. Drink plenty of water, and avoid trying new products that could cause irritation.

  • Hair and Makeup: I’m not the best when it comes to hair and makeup so I always opt for professional hair and makeup. For me, it makes a world of difference, I feel like it enhances my natural glow and taking the pressure off getting ready. If you’re confident doing it yourself, stick with what makes you feel beautiful.

  • Nails: Your hands will likely be featured cradling your bump, so treat yourself to a manicure—or at least trim and clean your nails. If your nails are already painted make sure to repair in chips.

  • Rest and Hydration: I know getting a good nights sleep can be difficult when pregnant but aim for a good night’s sleep and drink water throughout the day leading up to your session to keep your skin looking fresh and your energy up.

  • Confidence: Wear something that makes you feel amazing, and remember—your beauty shines brightest when you feel comfortable in your own skin.

Location and Timing: Creating the Perfect Setting

Choosing the right location sets the tone for your session. Whether you prefer the coziness of an indoor session or outdoor scenery, each option has its perks:

  • Outdoor Sessions: These offer stunning natural backdrops and are especially magical during golden hour—that dreamy window of time just after sunrise or before sunset.

  • Studio Sessions: A studio provides privacy, comfort, and a controlled environment, which can be especially helpful on unpredictable weather days.

  • Reflect Your Personality: Pick a location that feels like you—a beach you love, a quiet park, or the comfort of your home.

  • Backup Plans: Always consider a weather contingency plan, especially for outdoor sessions. I’ll work closely with you to reschedule if needed or pivot to a studio option.

What to Bring to Your Maternity Session

Preparation helps keep the experience stress-free and enjoyable. Here’s a checklist to consider:

  • Comfort Items: Bring water, a small snack, and a pair of comfortable shoes you can change into when walking around your location.

  • Touch-up Supplies: A comb, lipstick, or makeup for quick touch-ups can help you feel fresh throughout the session.

  • Props: Ultrasound images, baby shoes, or special items with meaning can add a personal touch.

  • Outfit Options: A second outfit gives variety and a backup in case of spills or changes in lighting.

  • Support Person: Whether it’s your partner, a friend, or a parent, having someone with you can be helpful and comforting.

Posing Tips for Natural, Flattering Photos

Feeling unsure about how to pose? You’re not alone! Lucky for you, you have me! Here are a few simple techniques to help you feel at ease:

Expect Simple, Elegant Poses: I’ll guide you into natural poses that showcase your bump and connection.

Hands-on-Belly: This classic pose works wonders—play with different placements like above, below, or heart shapes over your bump.

Involving Loved Ones: Including your partner or children adds emotional depth and makes your photos even more meaningful.

Speak Up: Do you have any must-have images? See a photo on Pinterest or my website you just loved and want to try to include it in your gallery? Share it with me and we can use that as inspiration for your images!

Candid Moments: Some of the most beautiful photos are in-between shots—laughing, walking, or snuggling with your loved ones.

Capturing This Beautiful Chapter

Preparing for maternity photos doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. The key takeaways?

  • Schedule your session between 28-34 weeks

  • Prioritize comfort, confidence, and connection

  • Choose a setting that reflects your style and season

  • Plan your wardrobe and accessories with care

  • Trust your photographer—you’re in good hands

What I’ve learned over the years is that helping mothers feel beautiful starts with creating a space where they feel seen, supported, and celebrated. Maternity photography is one of my favorite sessions to capture because it honors your journey, your strength, and your love before your baby arrives.

If you’re ready to document this incredible moment in your life, I’d be so honored to be your Essex maternity photographer. The best time to book your session is during your second trimester so we can schedule for that ideal 28–34 week window.

Let’s celebrate you, mama. You deserve it.
